VPNs use IPSec to create private tunnels over the public network, which in turn can improve the security of Intemet± data transfers. GRE can encapsulate various protocol packets within an IP tunnel. BGP is a routing protocol used between autonomous systems. This chapter discusses the basic principles and configuration implementation of Internet connectivity technologies, PPPoE, GRE, IPSecVPN, and BGP.19.1 Overview of Remote Connectivity19.1.1 Public WAN Infrastructure Remote Connectivity To connect to an enterprise site, remote workers must first connect to the Internet via a broadband connection, and domestic ISPs offer a variety of ways to provide broadband access. When choosing, users should consider the pros and cons of each broadband type, which may include cost, speed, security, and ease of implementation or installation.1 DSL: DigitalSubscriberLine, a technology that provides broadband data services over ordinary telephone lines, is divided into AsymmetricDigitalSubscriberLine (ADSL) and SymmetricDigitalSubscriberLine (SDSL). ADSL provides subscribers with a wider downlink bandwidth than uplink bandwidth, while SDSL provides the same uplink bandwidth as downlink bandwidth. Different variants of DSL support different bandwidths, and the transmission rate depends on the actual length of the local loop and the type and condition of the loop cabling. For example, for ADSL service to meet the requirements, the loop distance must be shorter than 5.46 kilometers.
