Various devices use pairs of cables to transmit data, and 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T use two pairs of wires: one pair for sending data and one pair for receiving data. When two devices connected to each other transmit using a pair of twisted-pair cables with the same pinout, the cable used to connect them, the crossover cable, must cross connect the transmit pair of each device with the expected receive pair of the other device. Conversely, devices that already use opposite pairs for transmitting data use straight-through cables and no longer require crossover pairs. Figure 3-4 shows an example in a typical switched LAN, showing the connections for various types of pin sequences.Efficient troubleshooting requires an understanding of which devices use which wire pairs for transmission. Table 3-3 lists most common devices in the CCNA and the wire pairs they use. Note that crossover wires are required when connecting two types of devices in the same column in the table, and straight-through wires are required when connecting two devices in different columns in the table.
